Le Mans is a prestigious sports car race that will take place on June 14 and 15, 2025. It is preceded by practice and qualifying rounds. The race takes place near the city of Le Mans in France and usually attracts more than 300,000 spectators. It is one of three races that form part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport.
Le Mans is a test of endurance, unlike other motor races that test the fastest times. This event is grueling and pushes the cars and drivers to the limit. The car that covers the greatest distance in 24 hours wins the race. In the race this year are 62 cars and 186 drivers.
Race conditions
This challenging race is held on the Circuit de la Sarthe, which combines public roads and an asphalt track. As the race is held in mid-June, the temperature inside the cars can reach sizzling highs. It often rains at this time of year. The race starts mid-afternoon and finishes the following day, a grueling 24 hours later. The competitors often cover over 5,000 km.
With drivers driving through the night, sometimes in torrential rain, and encountering many trials, manufacturers have a good test of their engines. It is not only the high-speed stretches that challenge the drivers but also the curves and chicanes. The slightest mistake and the driver can lose hold of the car.
Sports betting is legal in many states in the U.S., and Americans love to bet on motorsports. They can make a futures bet now on which car will win the event.
Hypercar Class
The Hypercar Class will feature 21 cars this year and all the top car manufacturers compete. Both the Porsche and Toyota teams will be trying to take back some of the prestige they had in the past this year.
The Ferrari team, like Ricky Bobby, a fictional NASCAR driver in a movie who was a multiple NASCAR winner, could win Le Mans for the third time this year. It won the race in 2023 and 2024.
Aston Martin’s first appearance since 2011 is likely to attract attention this year. The Aston Martin team features Harry Tincknell, Tom Gamble, and Ross Gunn.
LMP2 Class
The fans’ favorite LMP2 class has 17 entries this year. Both emerging new talent and seasoned racers will take part in this class. Some notable names include Jakub Śmiechowski, Renger van der Zande, and François Perrodo. Jamie Chadwick, a two-time W Series Championship winner, will participate for the first time at Le Mans.
LMGT3 Class
With the LMGT3 class going into its second year, attention is likely to focus on Valentino Rossi as he takes the wheel for Team WRT. He has won the MotoGP World Championship seven times.
The drivers
When looking at Le Mans history, it becomes evident that the race isn’t just about the cars but also about the drivers. By the end of the 1980s, the rules required that each car be driven by at least three drivers. This year, 19 former Formula 1 drivers are participating in the race.
The Ferrari team that won in 2024 (Miguel Molina, Nicklas Nielsen, and Antonio Fuoco) will return in the #51 machine. The #50 Ferrari will also be the team that won in 2023.
This year, Toyota Gazoo Racing returns with its seasoned crews. In the #7 machine will be Kamui Kobayashi, Nyck de Vries, and Mike Conway. In its #8 machine will be another team of seasoned drivers.
Porsche Penske Motorsport has three entries and features drivers like Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy, and Pascal Wehrlein.
BMW M Team WRT features Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marciello, and Dries Vanthoor in one car and Robin Frijns, René Rast, and Sheldon van der Linde in another car.
Beyond the track
The event has fan zones at Tertre Rouge and the Karting area with climbing walls, laser games, and racing simulators. The Manufacturers’ Village has interactive exhibits from the major automotive brands. Fans can take a closer look at some of the cutting-edge technologies they use in their cars. The traditional Drivers’ Parade through Le Mans city center, autograph sessions, and pit walks allow the fans to interact with teams and drivers.
