James Cameron has had some involvement in the Terminator franchise post Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but the iconic director hasn’t been in the chair for any since the 1991 offering. The filmmaker has expressed a desire to return for a potential Terminator 7, and he even has a script in mind. However, the latest estimates suggest that it could be at least a decade before another Cameron Terminator gets made. The 70-year-old is currently busy with the Avatar franchise, which is set to run until at least 2031.
Cameron Reportedly Keen to Make Terminator 7
In various interviews over the past few years, James Cameron has hinted that he’s not done with The Terminator. In 2023, he revealed that he was working on a new concept for the franchise but wanted to see how AI develops in the real world before committing. It would indeed be an interesting time for Cameron to revisit his ideas about a robot takeover, seeing as AI and robotics are now having a real impact on everyday society.
If Cameron does return to the franchise, though, he has suggested that a new movie will move away from some of the flops of recent years. It could be argued that there hasn’t been a great movie in the series since Cameron’s last one, and it will take the expertise of the blockbuster director to bring back disenchanted fans. That means starting afresh, with a brand new story and set of characters.
Director Busy With Avatar Films Currently
Unfortunately, it could be some time before Cameron is able to get to his planned Terminator 7, as all his time is consumed with the Avatar franchise. He released Avatar: The Way of the Water in 2022, and this is set to be followed by Avatar: Fire and Ash in 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled for 2029, with Avatar 5 in 2031. That means that, if Cameron returns to Terminator, it could be in 2031 or 2032.
Cameron is a renowned perfectionist, which is why his career film catalogue is so sparse. He will be putting all of his attention into the multi-billion dollar Avatar franchise over the next few years to ensure it’s as good as it can possibly be.
Franchise Kept Alive in Other Ways
If Cameron is set to direct another Terminator picture, fans will be happy to wait until he’s done with Avatar. There’s little chance of people forgetting about the franchise, as it’s still kept alive in other ways in the mainstream.
For instance, there are various Terminator mobile games, with Terminator: Resistance and Terminator Genisys: Future War up there with the most popular options. There are also various casino online slots, such as The Terminator Win & Spin and Terminator 2 Online Slot. Despite new games cropping up constantly in the industry, these titles have always remained popular.
Even though experts in the industry expect it to be a decade or so before Cameron returns to The Terminator, it may be worth the wait. Indeed, if the legendary director decides that Terminator 7 will be his final film, it could be an excellent way to end his career.
